One of the keys to FG Wilson providing reliable power is using quality components in their gensets. One of the most imporant components is the Perkins engine that powers the FG Wilson generator whether its an 11 kVA or a 2200kVA.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of Perkins and I thought it might be good to share some of the history of Perkins and its close relationship to FG Wilson.
Perkins was created by Frank Perkins and Charles Chapman to develop a high speed engine for cars and light trucks in 1932 in England. Perkins really began growing in the 1940s. In the 1960s Perkins was taken over by a tractor company Massey-Ferguson. During this period of time Perkins developed the 6.354 and 4.236 engines that were used not only in vehicular applications but FG Wilson began to use in its generators.
Perkins purchased the factory of Rolls-Royce Diesel in Shrewsberry, England and later Dorman Diesel for larger 300 to 2200 KVA range.
In 1998 Caterpillar aquired Perkins as they were the single largest customer when you include the volume purchased by FG Wilson. Today Perkins has engine manufacturing facilities in the UK , Brazil and China and supply FG Wilson factories in those countries.
While Perkins sells industrial engines to many genset packagers around the world FG Wilson works hand in hand with Perkins in developing new industrial engines for generator applications. FG Wilson has benefited greatly from this close relationship with Perkins and has differentiated them from other manufacturers in services and support. Today FG Wilson dealers locally have the full service and support capability of the Perkins engines giving FG Wilson customers one point of responsibility for the complete generator.
